Garden in the Sky

This rooftop penthouse outdoor space is a 360° degree wraparound with exceptional aerial views of all of Brooklyn and Manhattan. To the west, the apartment is basically a wall of glass through windows of the conservatory which looks toward Manhattan. It is very much a thoroughly "Windows of the World" feeling. To the east, a more Brooklyn feeling, slightly calmer and more restful with a treetop effect as this view overlooks Prospect Park.

We took this bleak, exposed environment and created a comfortable, inviting outdoor living space that was sheltered from the harsh elements of sun and wind. There was a need for an outdoor cooking and dining area for entertaining; an area for sitting and relaxing; an area for a sustainable garden and potting shed; and an area for storage. As the terrace is large there will be room for casual strolling with ever-changing views while still keeping the flowing sense of one space.

We divided the terrace into nine clearly defined areas or "rooms": an outdoor sitting area for conversation; an outdoor food preparation and dining area; an area for contemplation; an intimately furnished sitting area for relaxation and sunbathing; a shady retreat; an intimate breakfast nook and sitting area with cactus garden; a storage area; a sustainable vegetable and herb garden with potting shed; and a cutting garden.

Gardens by Joan completed this project in November of 2007 and enjoys maintaining its beautiful landscape.
